A key hurdle on the road to establishing a low carbon economy is the need to manage the fluctuating nature of the power supply generated from renewable energy sources. In addressing this challenge, energy storage technologies-which can be used to store thermal, electrical, chemical, kinetic or potential energy and discharge it whenever required-are fast emerging as an increasingly important solution. By storing energy when supply exceeds demand, they can enable producers to secure power for times of low supply and help to overcome the economic and operational problems associated with intermittency.
