BRAZIL Rousseff Out, Temer In, No Problem?

When Latin America's largest democracy removes its elected president for committing crimes that pale in comparison to the conduct of some of her regional authoritarian peers — and no one seems to mind — is that a problem? Throughout her impeachment, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff labeled the endeavor a sham and admonished her fellow politicians, maintaining that a head of state could not be removed for simply being unpopular (EC Sep.2'16). At its core though, democracy is a popularity contest and with Brazil's economy in near free-fall, Rousseff was essentially tossed out on just such a premise.
