摘要

Some 50 years ago Australia was set to become the first country south of the equator to introduce civilian nuclear power into its electricity generation and transmission network. In 1958, then Prime Minister Robert Menzies opened the research laboratories of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC.) at Lucas Heights near Sydney. On Australia Day, in 1958, he ceremonially "started-up" the nation's first research reactor HIFAR (High Flux Australian Reactor). As early as 1962, the University of New South Wales had established an Institute for Nuclear Science in anticipation of Australia's nuclear future and the need for well trained staff for the A.A.E.C and associated nuclear laboratories and regulatory and diplomatic staff in Canberra.
