Expansion work at the Shell- and Saudi Aramco-backed Motiva refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, could be finished by mid-2012, adding a 90,000 b/d coking unit to existing capac- ity. Shell executives said on a fourth-quarter 2011 earnings call that the project at the joint venture, which is split 50/50 between Shell and Saudi Aramco, will raise total crude oil refining ca- pacity to 600,000 b/d. As a byproduct, petroleum coke produc- tion is expected to increase sharply from current rates of 1mn t/ yr.
