Global steam coal markets were mostly lower in February, although floods in Australia constricted supply and helped boost export prices there. Lingering pressures on eurozone economies and lacklus- ter weather-related demand pushed prices lower elsewhere. Prompt-quarter coal CIF Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp averaged $103.64/mt in February, below $106.57/mt in January and $111.52/mt in December. European generators have ample inventories and are not rushing into the market despite some bargain buying amid a steep contango in the forward curve.
