THERMAL POWER STATION USES ALMOST NO WATER, HAS NO CHIMNEY

Within a half-hour's drive of the site of Homer's Troy in Turkey's far west, a coal-fired power station as modern as Troy is ancient is nearing completion (Figure 1). Its fuel will be a coal that by Australian standards is little better than dirt: very high in sulphur, moisture and ash, yet its two fluidised bed boilers will ensure flue gas emissions and, perhaps more importantly, ground-level concentrations, of oxides of sulphur and nitrogen (SOx and NOx) are exceptionally low. The climate is, well, Mediterranean -resembling that of much of southwest and southern Australia, and in common with these areas water is far too valuable to waste in evaporative cooling systems. This power station, which will generate 320MW of electricity, was designed to use almost no water, a consequence of its Heller dry cooling system.
