New Pemex executive to decide refineries fate

Mexican state-owned oil company Pemex has named a new downstream director, who will help decide the fate of its ageing refineries. Carlos Murrieta Cummings will replace Jorge Itzal Martinez Herrera from 1 September. The latter has only held the post for a few months, following the departure of Alejandro Martinez Sibaja in February. Murrieta served as Pemexs chief operating officer in 2009-15, a critical period for the firm that included the 2014 passage of a government energy reform that revoked its sector monopoly. 'He is very interested in pursuing clean fuels projects, but budget insufficiency will remain a problem,' a Pemex adviser says.
