China’s petroleum coke buying began to recover in February, even as concerns over a potential ban on certain quality coke gripped the market. The country imported about 345,000t of coke in February, up by 87pc from January levels, but still down by almost 8pc from a year earlier, data from China’s customs agency show. January’s import total was the lowest since November 2014 as buyers had avoided making purchases out of concern over an air pollution law revision that was set to take effect on 1 January. February’s totals suggest that buyers crept back into the market after the implementation date passed with no enforcement announced.
