Alberta's energy mix will see a significant shift towards natural gas over the next few decades, according to a forecast presented at the Alberta Chamber of Resources Semi-Annual General Meeting held June 18, 2015 in Calgary. However, this forecast had a notable absence of any contribution from nuclear power. We cannot afford to ignore the potential of nuclear power to help return the Western Canadian oil and gas sector to prosperity. That may seem counter-intuitive - but here's how nuclear power can help the patch. With the downturn in oil prices and the ever increasing costs to find, develop and recover new oil deposits, the industry must take advantage of new opportunities to produce oil cheaper than it has up until now.
