Guide Rails, as basic mechanical element of elevator systems, are affected during movement of the car and safety gear operation by two different kinds of stresses bending and buckling. The calculation of these stresses which are important in selection of guide rails is carried out accordance EN 81-1. In this study, in order to show stress distribution, the guide rails are modelled and analysis are performed for different load situation. In addition, the free fall test suit is set up and stresses occurred during safety gear operation are logged by means of strain-gages. The results from conventional calculation according to EN81-1, finite element analysis and experimental set up are compared.
