This is a most welcome book that has been eagerly awaited. It has been written and reviewed by members of the Pharmaceutical Isolator Working Part)', which includes experts from industry, hospitals and isolator manufacturers. The working party was originally convened following discussions between UK NHS Regional Quality Control Pharmacists and some isolator manufacturers. The Regional Quality Control Pharmacists' subcommittee of the Regional Pharmaceutical Officers, later the Pharmaceutical Quality Control Committee of the NHS and now the NHS Quality Assurance Committee, agreed to the formation of a special interest group in 1992. Some delay in the preparation of the book occurred while the International Standards Organisation (ISO) was developing a style of nomenclature and a definition of terms that would be more universally acceptable. At the time of publication, some of these terms have not been finally agreed but further delay in publication was unacceptable, since it could potentiate a perceived risk to patients or operators if they were adhering to older working practices.
