The long history of the Le Mans 24 hour race dates back to 1923. Not long after, the race began to go through a recurrent cycle typical of all motor racing formulae. The idea to hold a 24-hour motor race grew from the challenge of making motor cars reliable. If you bad the money, what better way to demonstrate the reliability of drivable on-road cars than by racing them competitively for hours on end? Right up to the famous winning days of the C- and D-type Jaguar, it was not unknown for Le Mans contenders to drive to the Sarthe circuit, even though he Mans was principally designed for sports cars. Although sports cars are one of the hardest car classes to describe accurately, they are road cars by definition. If you want to make sure of winning, there is a strong temptation to make your road-going sports car a bit special.
