摘要

There are great differences in the technological requirements of mining operations, even in one mine where open-cut and underground operations may be taking place. Above ground, communications can be relatively simple but it is another matter below the surface - and sometimes it can be crucial. Uniform codes apply to certain classes of electrical equipment and safety standards need strict adherence, especially below ground where the consequences of a mishap can be greater. Yet as the adage goes, "familiarity breeds contempt", and familiarity is a trap for suppliers as well as customers. In talking with one supplier, who in the past also provided systems integration, what becomes apparent is that the mining market is conservative in its approach to new technologies and their adoption.
