There are many zoos in the UK, some exhibiting a range of species, others, for example aquaria, being more specialised. All are governed by the same legislation and all require veterinary involvement. While some of the larger collections may employ full-time veterinarians, this is beyond the financial scope for most, if not all, of the smaller zoos. Vets in practice, especially those already interested in exotic species, may therefore be approached to work with a collection. This may be as a primary veterinary surgeon or it may be to provide 'fire brigade work' alongside a (distant) consultant. John Chitty outlines what working with a zoo entails, and lists some points that should be considered before undertaking such work.
