EUROPE SET TO ERADICATE ENERGY-GUZZLING TRANSFORMERS FROM OUR NETWORKS

Dr Lore Grohmarm from Wilson Power Solutions outlines the new ELS Eco Design Directive for transformers and explains how Super Low Loss Amorphous Transformers have been a key driver for this new legislation. The European Commission estimates around 2.5% of all energy consumed in the EU is wasted through transformer losses. Following years of campaigning based on advances in product performance, the European Union has finally acted on the unnecessary energy wastage through transformer losses with the EU Ecodesign Directive for transformers. This new directive requires all transformers placed in the market (or being commissioned) for the first time to comply with strict new design specifications that aim to eliminate the worst performing transformer models from being installed across the EU. The new directive will take effect from July 2015 (Tier 1) with a second phase (with even more stringent requirements) being planned for 2021 (Tier 2).
