THE UTILITY OF DRONES IN THE SURVEYING OF BUILDINGS AND BUILDING WORKS

This article seeks to introduce Airborne Drone or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications for Chartered Building Engineers in the surveying of buildings and, more generally, on progressing building works. The author is an early Irish adopter of this new process and believes that regular flights during building works provides clients, construction project managers and main contractors with the most up-to-date reporting to better track construction progress, manage resources, reduce delay and disruption and so keep the project on schedule and within budget. And when it comes to Chartered Building Engineers surveying existing buildings, the author has seen the benefits of drone use first hand in his practice, particularly in obtaining information from remote or difficult to access areas at height on buildings.
