The recently published 2005 edition of BRE Special Digest 1 Concrete in aggressive ground (SD1:2005) includes wide ranging revisions to the procedures for ground assessment and specification of below ground concrete. The new guidance will affect construction practice in extensive areas of the UK (some 25 percent of England and Wales) where ground is aggressive owing to naturally occurring sulfates. SD1 was first published in four separate parts in 2001 (with minor revisions in 2003) to give interim guidance following the discovery of cases of the thaumasite form of sulphate attack (ISA) in bridge foundations on the M5 motorway. The new edition, published as a single volume, takes account of recent research findings on TSA and introduction of new European standards for cement and concrete.
