"Energy efficiency and new clean technology are vital to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. However, we also need to prepare to live in a different climate. Conditions are set to become more extreme, with higher winter and summer temperatures, and changes in rainfall patterns affecting moisture levels and runoff. The buildings and other infrastructure we're designing and building now (as well as our existing stock) will still need to function under this new climate - which has no exact match in today's world." These words were used by Michael Dickson, Chair, new Construction Research and Innovation Strategy Panel (nCRISP), in the foreword to the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) publication "Building knowledge for a changing climate - the impacts of climate change on the built environment".
