New tools help advance the search to replace reserves. Exploration is about people and ideas. Geoscientists have the unique ability to visualize the subsurface in three dimensions and assimilate a lot of information from many sources to come up with creative play concepts. Operators are constantly working to replace reserves, and to do so, they must tackle riskier and more complex structures than ever before, like the deepwater subsalt plays in Brazil, Angola, Gabon, and Ghana, or the over-thrusted plays in Western Canada and the Sub-Andean basins. Additionally, today's reservoirs are increasingly difficult, including deepwater turbidities in Angola, fractured carbonates and deep gas reservoirs in the Middle East, emerging shale gas plays in Eastern Europe, and coalbed methane resources in Australia. As a result, there is an evergrowing need to facilitate creative ideas for improved exploration success.
