The 449,000 civil servants in the UK deal with many different aspects of government and work in an enormous variety of roles, from policymaking and advising ministers on legislation to examining motorists' driving skills, handling benefit enquiries and promoting British business overseas. But for all the wide range of the remit, the civil service has a consistent need for high-quality generic e-learning. Launched in April 2011, Civil Service Learning (CSL) was created to centrally manage delivery of all generic learning and development for civil servants, from classroom courses to online resources and e-learning, in order to provide a single unified learning offer for the civil service. CSL is responsible for procuring high-quality learning products from a range of suppliers, which can be accessed through a single CSL portal accessible only to civil servants.
