There has always been a rivalry between academic awards (degrees) and those of professional bodies. Since the late 1960s the ongoing process has been to move towards degrees or honours degrees being accredited as exempting from professional exams but not from an evaluation of professional competence. Many professional bodies (ABE included) retain their own process and awards whilst also recognising exempting degrees. The awards of professional bodies are not easily transferable into the academic environment despite their very real vigour in assessment and professional content. The government now appears to be in the process of rectifying this in its consultation document, Recognising Achievement in the Twenty-First Century, published last December by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
