The Russian economy is on the up. In 2011 the gross domestic product rose by 4 per cent, consumer spend' ing by 5 per cent and investment in production sites and equipment by 6 per cent. Even if the dynamic in the current year has weakened a little, the signs continue to be positive and the medium-term prospects for many industries are very promising. The plastics and packaging sectors in particular benefit from this favourable development and experts predict continued great potential for both industries. Nationwide, capacities in the packaging sector are being extended and plants modernised, in particular the food and drink industry is seeing processed and packaged foods and convenience products becoming increasingly popular. Packaging plays an important role in the entire consumer goods sector in Russia, not only acting as a protective container for storage and transportation, but also for the marketing and presentation of products.
