Development and Future Potential of the FINEX Process

Environmental and economical demands forced worldwide research and development efforts for cokeless hot metal production on fine ore basis. The technological concepts of new fine ore smelting reduction technologies which have reached at least the pilot plant stage are discussed with special reference to the FINEX process. The FINEX process is jointly developed by VAI (VOEST ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau, Austria), RIST (Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, Korea) and POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company Ltd., Korea). The development work started in 1992 and, a pilot plant of 150 t/d is being constructed. A report on the program and status of FINEX process development and future aspects for fine ore smelting reduction processes is given.
