An actual topic concerning environmental aspects in the iron and steel industry is the recycling of steel plant residues such as flue dust, sludge and rolling mill scale and with it the avoiding of deposits. Subsequently a research program has been started at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy at Aachen University of Technology to investigate the possibility of a combined injection of coal and dust into the blast furnace in order to decrease the deposition of waste material. The direct use of dust leads to a substitution of pellets or briquettes and with it to a decrease of agglomeration costs and energy. By help of a laboratory rig the behavior of solids injected into the raceway is tested. First experiments are carried out with pure iron ore to determine the reduction behavior of iron oxides within a residence time of 10 to 20 ms in a simulated raceway. Based on these results different dusts such as blast-furnace flue dust and dust from the casting bay are tested. The effect of injection of iron ore or iron containing dust on the behavior in the raceway of the blast furnace will be described and discussed.
