In this paper fundamental mechanisms underlying the phenomena observed in typical industrial bulk type softening and melting experiments are addressed. It was found that the onset of softening is related to the start of melt formation within the microstructure of the wustite core in ironbearing material. Further softening appears to be related to the quantity of melt formed as a function of temperature. The prediction of melt formation trajectories as a function of composition is discussed.
