The blast furnaces at Bethlehem Steel's BurnsHarbor ,Indiana plant operated with granular coal injectionthroughout 1995 and 1996 .The coal used during 1996 was a lowvolatile Virginia coal .The grinding characteristics of thiscoal ,with a Hardgrove Index of 100 ,helped to stabilize theoperation of the coal processing system .The blast furnace processalso achieved significant improvements in processstability ,reaching replacement rates predicted by earlier computersimulations .Of particular note was a stabilization of wall heatflux on D furnace and the attainment of a higher coal injection ratethan was projected in 1995 without unacceptable refractorywear .This paper discusses critical events and achievements inBethlehem Steel's switch from natural gas injection to coalinjection on the C and D blast furnaces at Burns Harbor and thesubsequent process results with the injection of low volatile granular coal.
