In May 2011, scientists, faculty members from 12 universities, community members, and undergraduate and graduate students convened for the sixth Break the Cycle (BTC) symposium, sponsored by the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Specialty Unit at Emory University. This symposium highlighted the exceptional work done by the BTC faculty over the past 6 years, growing the mentoring program from just 5 student participants from one state during the inaugural year to 12 student participants from six states during this most recent cycle. Further, over the past 6 years, 45 students have had the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member, collaborating with fellow students and faculty, delving deeply into research in the field of children's environmental health disparities, and investigating ways to break the cycle of disadvantage and disability. Many of these 45 students have gone on to commit themselves to the mission of reducing disparity and improving children's environmental health.
