GROWING ENERGY: FEEDING THE BIOFUELS DEBATE

Biomass is emerging as a vital component in the sustainable energy armoury of the Australasian forest industry and beyond, as John Halkett reports. WHILE the impetus to use sawmill wastes and other wood manufacturing residues to generate on-site steamand electricity continues to build, the potential use of plantations and forest residues for energy production is attracting increasing attention. In New Zealand and Australia, research and investment in the development needed to underpin the transition to renewable forms of energy, including biomass-based fuels, are accelerating.
