Control of BYD and its vectors in durum wheat under mediterranean crop conditions

The efficiency of an insecticide application in autumn, and the management of the sowing date for controlling aphid populations and reducing BYD incidence on durum wheat was evaluated. The aphicide treatment kept early-sown plots free of aphids during the winter. At the beginning of spring, aphid populations were higher in early plots, especially in mild winters which allowed higher populations increase. The aphicidc treatment was effective in reducing BYD secondary spread in autumn, particularly for PAV like serotypes, but it did not reduce the virus incidence in spring. Late-sown plots were not infested by aphids up to spring and the autumn primary infection of PAV and MAV was avoided by delaying the sowing. PAV spring incidence was lower in late sown plots, but not that of MAV. The usefulness of both control methods in crop conditions of the mediterranean area are discussed.
