Innovative advances in aesthetic & reconstructive oculofacial plastic surgery

This issue of International Ophthalmology Clinics includes many of the recent advances in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery. As with many of the surgical fields, both aesthetic and reconstructive oculofacial plastic surgery has advanced significantly in the past several years by taking advantage of new technology and instrumentation, new medical therapies, and innovative approaches to the evaluation and management of conditions. In some cases, this has allowed for less-invasive surgical procedures with shorter operating times, smaller incisions, and fewer risks. Our approaches to the forehead, eyelid, lacrimal system, and orbit have continued their evolution toward minimally invasive or less-invasive interventions. New therapies or innovative uses of previously available therapies, such as the use of beta-blockers for infantile hemangiomas, have also completely revolutionized the way certain conditions are treated with significantly improved outcomes. The use of lasers, facial fillers, and botulinum toxins are other examples where conditions traditionally requiring surgical approaches are now commonly treated with office-based interventions.
