The association between myopia and glaucoma has been a topic of discussion for many years. Early reports linking the two date back to 1925.1 Subsequent prevalence studies have found the frequency of myopia among open angle glaucoma patients to range from 6% to 29%.2 The literature includes multiple epidemiological studies demonstrating an association between myopia and glaucoma. However, high myopia can make the diagnosis of glaucoma more difficult due to myopic degenerative optic nerve changes and myopic field defects. In addition, other risk factor studies including several major prospective clinical trials such as the Ocular Hypertensive Treatment Study have not found myopia to be associated with glaucoma,3'4 and thus the relationship remains controversial. The relationship between myopia and open angle glaucoma is likely complex.
