Soils & Sports Surface Science

As usual, research work in the Division of Soils and Sports Surface Science covered a wide range of turf problems and issues for several different sports. Two new areas of research and development work started in 2002. Firstly, the STRI carried out amajor project developing monitoring systems for turf quality on putting surfaces for the Netherlands Golf Federation. This involved a programme of detailed monitoring carried out on ten Dutch courses in which a wide range of grass, soil and playing quality characteristics were measured on fine sand rootzones which are generally a characteristic of golf greens in the Netherlands. Measurements included species composition, turf density, particle size distribution, variation of organic material content with depth, pH, nutrient content, surface firmness and ball roll. The work is continuing in 2003, but has already resulted in a guideline document on the management of Dutch golf greens and responses to monitoring information.
