When asked about how things are progressing regarding the general management of a golf course, green-keepers often reply, jovially, that it would be all right if it weren't for the golfers! This serves to emphasise the point that, unlike an ornamentallawn, the turf on a golf course has a function and that is to sustain wear. With 40,000-50,000 rounds per year now commonplace on an 18-hole course, it is clear that the level of wear which we expect our courses to tolerate is significant. Advances in the development of grass cultivars and a massive expansion in the range of machinery available have helped the situation, but both the design and maintenance of the course still plays a major role in managing the effects of wear.
