Indonesia is studying changes to its policy on fuel subsidies in a bid to avoid a repeat of the crippling subsidy bill it faced after crude oil prices soared last year (IOD May19'08,p3). President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - sworn in for a second term on Tuesday - has reportedly asked the finance ministry to look at changing the system. Jakarta earlier said it wanted to end fuel subsidies by 2012 and allow pump prices to move in line with international oil prices, while maintaining direct subsidies to poorer households.
