The carob or St John's Bread tree (Ceratonia Siliqua L.) is a characteristic tree growing in many countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, its fruits were consumed as a result of the high sugar content and used as a remedy against diarrhoea, due to its high tannins (polyphenolics) content. The tannins present in the carob fruits are very similar to those present in the fruits of the oak and chestnut tree and these fruits are favoured by wild swine, even shortlv after birth.
