Exxon Mobil has gained exploration rights over more than one-quarter of Nor- drhein-Westfalen (NRW), Germany's most populous state. The US supermajor had disclosed last year that it had acquired nearly two million acres of leases (about 8,000 square kilometers) with unconventional gas potential in the neighboring states of North Rhine-West- phalia and Lower Saxony, but additional de- tails have now emerged (IOD Jul.30,p1).
