US integrated Murphy Oil will finally put the drill bit against the sand this year off the coast of Suriname, the small South American country oil companies hope holds resources similar to the giant finds off the coast of West Africa. These prospects, located in the Cretaceous Fan play, are believed to have geologic companions off the northeast coast of South America. The two regions were joined as one during the Lower Cretaceous period 100-145 million years ago when the sediments and organic material now comprising these hydrocarbon-bearing zones were laid to rest.
