Europe’s biggest electricity consumer, Germany, said Wednesday that 20% of its gross energy consumption could come from renewable sources by 2020 - up from roughly 10% now - beating a legally binding European Union goal of 18%. The EU goal for Germany encompasses sectoral targets for the electricity, transport, heat and cooling businesses. The lion’s share falls on electricity, which has to generate 38.6% of its power from renewable sources by 2020; transport has a 13.2% target, and heating and cooling 15.5%.
