Much of this issue is about how we, as nurses, can prepare for man-made or natural disasters and minimise their impact, both immediately and in the long term. It also deals with how we can help each other when we are the victims, as we have seen all too well over the past five years. I am pleased to see more attention being given to the topic of women during disasters, a time of increased vulnerability for them. As we approach International Women's Day on 8 March, my overall concern is about women in all situations -women in vulnerable situations and those in seemingly secure ones - and how, as nurses, we can effectively advocate for them
