摘要

The article by Hancock, RK. (2008), Migration: the effects on nursing education, International Nursing Review 55, 258-264, illustrates very well the pressing problems of nursing education resulting from nurse migration. However, because the aim of the paper is to 'raise awareness of the effects of nursing migration and nursing education (p. 259), I am concerned that only one side of the picture is being presented. There is no doubt that the nurse migration and nursing education situations are dire and the difficulties are great. Nevertheless, this does not mean that nothing can be done to meet the needs of patients while respecting the rights of nurses to migrate. The author offers some broad recommendations, but they offer little on what could be done now to make the best of an ever-worsening situation. Instead, there are many examples of short and long-term adaptations that countries can and are making to face this growing challenge. Some of the examples come directly from the author's list of problems, and others are trials and partial successes by countries around the world when dealing with nurse migration.
