Traditional shellbuilding for the investment casting process can take as long as two or three days because of the time required to thoroughly dry each layer between dips. Several efforts have been made recently to shorten that time. Among these are using faster drying solvents, drying tunnels, organic absorbent polymers, infrared light with its wavelength tuned to the spectrum of water, and heating the shell while it is being made. To date, none of these techniques has been universally accepted. A new method, recently reported at the Investment Casting Institute's 54th Technical Conference in Milwaukee, provides a promising option. The new technique uses traditional-formula stucco modified with amorphous mineral silicate and corn starch.
