Phytate is present in the seeds of all plants and is often considered anti-nutritive because it can bind multivalent cations, proteins and starch and reduce the availability of these nutrients for poultry. Phytate may also alter the physiology of thegastrointestinal tract (GIT) and this may be a temporary or permanent phenomenon. Supplemeation of diets with phytase has proven to be an efficient solution when addressing some of these problems and this may be time-dependent (Sebastian et al., 1996; Cowieson et al., 2006; Pirgozliev et al., 2007). This study was designed to investigate if previous exposure of young chickens to diets, high and low in phytate, and the subsequent provision of diets with phytate and phytase at different concentrations influenced performance caused by the antinutritive effects of phytate.
