"Highwall Mining" is a new coal mining method recently introduced in India for enhancement of coal production. When open pit coal mines reach their pit limits due to the presence of surface structures or uneconomical stripping ratios, the coal seams exposed at the final highwall are extracted using Highwall Mining [1], Often, thin coal seams otherwise unmineable due to various other reasons are also targeted for Highwall Mining by cutting a trench in virgin ground. The method comprises of extraction of coal from a series of parallel entries driven in the coal seam from the face of an existing highwall or one created by cutting a trench in virgin ground. It is a remotely operated coal mining technology as the entries remains unmanned and unsupported [1].
