Defining high-performance buildings

paraA major program, known as the 'Building Technologies Program', has been jointly initiated by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and several other federal agencies to encourage the development of the high-performance buildings (HPB) concept in the country. The DOE, trade associations, professional societies, national laboratories, and advocacy groups are all involved in the program in various capacities and interest. This program has been introduced by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) that has authorized the creation of the Office of Commercial High-Performance Green Buildings at the DOE. The act defines HPB as a building that integrates and optimizes, on a life-cycle basis, all major high performance attributes, including energy conservation, environment, safety, security, durability, and accessibility./para
