750 buffaloes from 30 breeding farms in southern Italy were examined for antibodies against bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD)/mucosal disease (MD) and bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) viruses [date not given] using homologous indirect ELISA assays. Rabbit immunoglobulins (IgG) anti-buffalo IgG conjugated to horseradish peroxidase were used as secondary antibody. The homologous ELISA assays were standardized using high titre sera from young buffaloes vaccinated against BVD and IBR viruses as positive controls. Anti-BHV-1 and anti-BVD virus antibodies were detected in 80.6 and 40% of the farms, respectively.
