DNA was extracted from blood samples of 18 unrelated Indian Murrah buffaloes, digested with HaeIII, blotted, and hybridized with 2 multilocus genomic probes (Jeffreys 33.15 and PSRC-15). DNA fragments of 3.0 kb and above were scored. The resolutionof bands with both the probes was good, and Jeffreys 33.15 produced 18.1±3.27 bands per fingerprint and PSRC-15 resolved 17.4±2.60 bands. The average band-sharing level was 0.113 with Jeffreys 33.15 and 0.140 with PSRC-15. The probability that 2 unrelated individuals will share identical DNA fingerprints was 3.09 X 10-16 for Jeffreys 33.15 and 1.34 X 10-15 for PSRC-15. The mean probability that 2 unrelated Murrah buffaloes will share a given DNA fragment was 0.118 and 0.148 respectively at the Jeffreys33.15 and PSRC-15 loci. It was concluded that both probes could be used for parentage verification and individual identification of Murrah buffaloes.
