Background. Following a severe financial decline in 2008, Beaumont sought to improve its performance improvement (PI) methodology. Our previous techniques involving classroom training, use of tools and extensive planning via committees had not produced significant sustained improvements. Intervention detail. Beaumont introduced the Toyota Production System (TPS) to our 1067-bed hospital. Using 2-day kaizen (rapid improvement) events as a training method, we began on one 80-bed medical/surgical nursing unit with a goal of increasing the time that nurses spend in direct patient care. Most staff participating in our events had no formal training in PI.
