International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) - Categories of the Component Body Structures, Functions, Activities and Participation Considered as Relevant for Liquidators of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster

The disaster of Chernobyl nuclear power plant (CNPP) on 26th April 1986 was the largest and most serious accident involving radiation exposure in the world. More than 6.000 inhabitants of Latvia were involved in liquidation works of the consequences of the accident. They were subjected to the external influence of the radiation, as well as an intake of radionuclides by water, food and inhaled nuclear meltdown. A feature characteristic for the biological action of the radiation is the extended latent time phase between the received corporal radiation and the manifestation of the biological reactions. In 1994 a Register was created in Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital. for Latvian patients with occupational diseases and for CNPP accident workers (liquidators) who had been subjected to the influence of radiation.
