There is a brief review of the literature on depression and old age. In particular, the association with health and disability is given consideration. However, it is also noted that much of the literature is based on research in Western society and that there is little to explain this in the Chinese population. To develop a framework to explain and understand this in relation to the Chinese population. A mixed methods design was adopted. The first part of the study was to quantify a range of psycho-social factors that might be associated with depression and the second part, using qualitative methods, was intended to illustrate the details of the participants' circumstances with relation to their thoughts and moods.
