This practice development section tackles an area which many people might not have considered, the integration of research and practice in the care of older people. The advantages of such an integration seem clear - practice can guide research towards exploring the issues which are key to practice, and researchers can point practitioners to evidence and ideas that might inform practice. This model does reflect what the first paper in this section, by Bridget Garnham, Julianne Cheek and Pamela Alde have described as a linear model of research application - the researchers develop the knowledge, and the practitioners meekly trot off and apply it. This linear model elevates the researcher to the status of expert, and the practitioner to a dutiful carrier out of instructions.
